Yesterday, the trailer to Discovery Asia‘s latest ‘Hip Korea‘ episode began spreading to YG stans far and wide as it will feature none other than 2NE1 and the rest of their YG Entertainment family. The episode is called ‘Hip Korea – The YG Family‘. The sixty-minute broadcast is expected to air in the Spring of 2013.
Previously, the program has broadcast in-depth documentaries on other famous South Koreans, including: entertainer Rain, actor Lee Byung Hun, and let’s not forget world champion figure-skater Kim Yuna. In addition to a history of Kim Yuna’s amazing figure skating achievements, her episode delved into ‘women leading the charge of South Korea’s hip new dynamism’. 2NE1′s Fire was included in her episode in several places and both Jinusean‘s Jinu Kim and the girls were briefly interviewed.
The trailer for the YG Family episode was actually uploaded back in July on Discovery Asia, but was not made public internationally until yesterday. Bang Singapore received such a thunderous reaction from making the video public they are considering broadcasting the show in all regions. They stated, “We have had quite a bit of interest from Europe, South America and the US so we expect it will air in those territories as well. We’ll keep you updated!”
The following description was added with the trailer: “The story of the rise of K-Pop as seen through the story of the YG Family’s biggest stars: Big Bang and 2NE1. Coming soon on Discovery Channel (Trailer – Work in Progress).”
In the trailer filmed vividly like a summer blockbuster, several of YGE’s recent collaborators are interviewed and footage from YG Family’s concerts is intermingled between interview clips..
Of 2NE1, will.i.am says, “The personality is important, because in a sea of noise, how are you going to tell anybody apart. And if you want to take on the world and say ‘I want to be the group that represents Asian perspective’, you have to have personality.” “Each one of those girls’ personalities shines, and that’s powerful.”
CL states, “We try to represent women and how they feel, tell them to stay strong and love themselves.”
Dara adds, “When we went to New York last year and was presented the MTV Iggy awards, seeing international fans from the US and beyond Asia, enjoying our performance, calling out for us, was a very electrifying moment.”

YG Family has had such and amazingly successful 2nd half of 2012 it is not that surprising that Discovery Asia would need more time to finalize the documentary. Back in July, there was no Psy-fever yet, Big Bang hadn’t sold out concerts pretty much EVERYWHERE, Lee HI hadn’t become YGE’s latest ‘monster rookie’, Epik High wasn’t officially with YGE, and 2NE1 had not started their New Evolution tour.
A Lot has happened and I am glad they are pushing back the broadcast to make the final documentary more complete (if that is indeed the reason for the delay of course.)
We will let you know once an exact airdate, time, and channels is announced.
“In this brave new world, superstars have to meet the greatest challenge of all…
the global audience.”
