Adding their own colors, the 2NE1 style
2NE1‘s music has been the key to their success as their style & personalities clearly come through, but the girls shine even when singing other people’s songs. Though they’ve had relatively limited activities, 2NE1 has had many outstanding covers, in both English and Korean.
During their debut,, 2NE1 did have a slight preference for English covers, which may be due to both the girls’ love of Rihanna and also due to their rather impeccable English. Bias aside, 2NE1 is one of the rare Kpop groups that can carry off an English song without listeners cringing at some horrible pronunciations. Take a listen to a few of the English covers that they’ve done in the past (almost) 3 years and you’ll see.
The very first time we heard our girls covering an English song as a group would be in 2009, when they covered Rihanna’s Umbrella on Park Kyung Lim’s Starry Night. Blackjacks were mesmerized by the melodious harmonization and amazing English pronunciation. Well, no surprise there as our main vocal Park Bom has lived in the USA for a significant period of time while CL has been educated in English since she was young. Dara too was somewhat fluent as she had lived in the Philippines, a country where English is one of its official languages, while Minzy, well, her love for Black Eyed Peas probably got her pretty proficient in English too.
Later on in 2009, their rendition of Umbrella was even performed live on an actual music show, KBS’ Music Bank to be exact. This was the very first special stage that the girls gave. Clad in the tight black leather outfits coupled while dancing in the (fake) rain with sleek black umbrellas as they belted out the lyrics in near flawless English, 2NE1 surely got the netizens talking with this cover of theirs.
The girls also continued to show their appreciation for Rihanna by covering yet another song of hers, Take A Bow, on another radio show, Choi Hwa Jung’s Power Time This would be a common favourite English cover among fans due to, take a guess, their perfect English. It was also this cover that got fans gushing at how good they sound singing in English.
And when this cover of theirs was brought onto KBS’ Yoo Hee Yeol Sketchbook where they performed an even more amazing rendition of the song, fans and non-fans alike were stunned. 2NE1 did amazing even when singing in a language that was not their first, and it was then that whispers and murmurings of them having the potential to debut in the US (with their English skills at hand) began.
But the girls didn’t just perform English covers as their amazing cover of Love is so Difficult at the 2009 KBS Gayo Daejun stunned audiences, and showcased the depth of their vocal abilities.
And who could forget the cute and energetic cover of their sunbae, Big Bang’s Last Farewell in 2009 during a SBS Inkigayo special episode? A year later at the SBS Gayo Daejun, 2NE1 collaborated with Kim Gun Mo and performed several songs with the legendary singer, including a new rendition of his widely known song,Excuse.
2NE1’s covers are always a blessing to our ears. Thank goodness they’ve done a sizable amount of covers in their 3 years, be it Korean or English song covers or done individually or as a group.
But, what is your favourite 2NE1 cover, Blackjacks?
It can be either a Korean or English song cover, whether they did it as a group or individually too. There’s bound to be one that you like! Leave your comments behind ^^
