A unique show of love for stars through rice wreaths and tree planting.
Kind-hearted donations of fanclubs
On July 28th, the front of Olympic Park Gymnastics Stadium was decorated with wreaths and boxes to represent mango trees donated by fans to celebrate 2NE1’s Seoul leg of their ‘Global Tour’.
On July 28th, mango trees drawn upon wreaths were lined up in front of Seoul Olympic Park Gymnastics Stadium. This day was the day that female quartet group 2NE1 began their ‘Global Tour’ with their concert in Seoul. The fans’ special gift was approximately 1,210 mango trees.
These trees will in fact be given to the Tonj region of South Sudan. South Sudan is one of the poorest countries with 90% of the population living on less than one dollar per day. The local residents will be able to have the mangoes as food or make profits by selling them. How is this possible?
Marketing team leader of 2NE1’s agency YG Entertainment, Lee Hyo Jung, said, “This motion started 4 years ago where fans suggested doing something that would be meaningful for the artists. Fans of Big Bang, 2NE1, etc have continued celebrating the artists’ activities through giving or donating these rice wreaths.”
The actual amount of rice wreaths bought is donated to areas experiencing difficulties. The Hallyu wave has increased the market for domestic artists and their overseas fans have also naturally brought their attention towards these issues.
A representative of the social enterprise Tree Planet, which takes in applications for tree planting, Kim Hyung Soo, explained, “The 2NE1 fans that participated were able to donate 1,210 mango trees which will be planted. With the help of our partnership with World Vision, these trees will proceed to be planted in South Sudan’s Tonj this coming October.” Kim continued, “Rather than the older tradition of fans only sending gifts to their favourite artists, the phenomenon of doing good deeds in the name of your favourite artists has recently boomed.”
It is the ‘evolution’ of kind-hearted donations.
The mango wreath was part of our 25th Project, ‘NEW EVOLUTION: KOREA Support’. Along with a large mango wreath, which represents 100 mango trees that will be planted in Sudan as part of the 2NE1′ Forest Project, we provided food support for both concert days.

The Korean text on the banner reads: “We’re cheering you on, now and forever! 1st Global Tour, 2NE1 FIGHTING!”
The text on the ribbons read: “Set the Roof on Fire…XoXo YGLadies.com“, “The World is Yours … ”공민지 이채린 박산다라 박봄“, “New Evolution: Seoul …2NE1 A GO GO GO ♥”
Thank you so much to our wonderful donors for making this, and all of our projects possible!
YGLadies is both honored and a bit saddened that our banner was chosen for this article. Honored because it is an acknowledgement of international fans’ contribution to the fandom, saddened because YGL was the only larger banner dedicated to 2NE1 the group, ie all four girls. In any event, we will strive to continue our support of the fabulous four-member team, 2NE1!
For more details about this project visit THIS post and for more information on our 31 other projects for the girls, please visit the To 2NE1 section of the forum. This is the second time K-media has spotlighted a YGLADIES project, back in 2010, our 1st anniversary project was featured in a Nate article.
We have been discussing upcoming projects and will have full details of our plans for future projects/events this week, so be on the look out for it.
